the dishes had names that include words like ‘challenge’ and ‘combo’, which isn’t a good start. even the paper menus, which had clearly been on the tables (presumably because the latter are too sticky for the former to fly away) for a long while, had the decency to look embarrassed. on the plus side, the staff were friendly and helpful, if a little slow to engage. there were 2 ales on draft, gk ipa and band of brewers, both predictably lacking in flavour. there is little to recommend this pub other than as an architectural curiosity or a source of free wifi, given that there is better food and ale to be had in many other places nearby. by e ta at 08:06 on 11 june piccadilly tap / cuckoo in york two linked bars housed in shipping containers, cuckoo is a small brewery tap. both are operated by pivovar of york, sheffield, euston and harrogate tap fame. by old boots at 21:06 on 10 june the four elms inn in edenbridge this is a rambling rather rural kentish pub with an attractive appearance, tile hung upper walls, attractive floral displays and a nice large lawned garden to one side. inside there are probably five distinct areas, you enter to find the bar ahead but no hand pumps. cut through to the right and there they are, three of them, on the day serving long man long blonde, tonbridge rustic and an unidentified welton's beer which at 4% could have been one of three or so. this part of the bar has a through fireplace nowadays with a log burner on one side, for the real deal go back left where this room is served by a huge inglenook which is in exposed brick and stonework with horse brasses along the bressumer beam. side rooms include a snug-like area, one set for formal dining and another far to the right which looks like it is in an added on area. the older areas have partially beamed fairly low ceilings although those directly on entering look too square and straight to be original and functional. pots and jugs hang from them however giving character. various framed bits on the walls and there is a community noticeboard. a decent spot worth seeking out in the back lanes, there is also a good sized car park. lunches and evening meals are served. by malden man at 19:06 on 10 june the yew tree inn in maidstone attractive old pub in the hamlet of sandling left somewhat of the beaten track when the a20(m) maidstone bypass was built in the 1960s. although it has two side rooms opened out in a large dining area, a substantial beer garden and two car parks, the former owners (shepherd neame) gave up on the place so it was good to see it rescued a few years ago. the small but comfortably furnished bar area retains a pleasingly traditional appearance, with five handpumps on the counter. on this visit, pride, hophead and two st austell beers - tribute (£3.50) and proper job - were being dispensed, with the other pull having a reversed adnams clip. by just a quick pint, then i'm off at 17:06 on 10 june to see the rest of the contributions view the site activity. all today at last, the long-awaited, and only partly forgotten-about, final instalment of my mild magic 2018 travels. as noted last time, i’ve identified six recurring themes in my visits to (mostly) unfamiliar pubs, most of them not particularly cheerful: not enough drinkers too many beers pub food is dead spoons has .... an extract taken from around manchester on a half of mild – 4 read the full post on oh good ale posted yesterday. today was supposed to be so relaxing. day off evening flight, loads of time to bash off a couple of posts before buggering off. then lexxie told me as i awoke: "the xs4all internet isn't working. mum's left you a note." luckily, we have two internets. it's a complicated story, but mostly .... an extract taken from emergency post read the full post on shut up about barclay perkins posted yesterday. right. have to make this quick. 17 minutes until i really need to leave for the airport. here's the text to go with the table i posted a couple of days ago. notice how they big up uk beer exports, and play down those of the central powers.
